Dr. Orlich underwent his postgraduate training in
the field of Urology at the world-famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for five
years. He is an active member of the American Urologic Association (9332378) and has been
licensed to practice medicine in the U.S. (Minnesota Lic. 23821). He has been a member of
the Mayo Alumni Association since 1979 and has been in active practice for twenty years.
An Associate Professor of Urology
at twoUniversities: the University of Costa Rica, and the University Automoma de Centro
America, Dr. Orlich has written 27 papers in this field with special interest in the
surgical treatment of male impotence with implantation of penile prosthesis, vasectomy
reversals, prostate cancer, urolithiasis and renal transplant. He also trained at the
University of Arkansas in Fort Smith, Arkansas on the implantation of penile prosthesis
for impotence.
Dr. Orlich is in charge of a renal transplant
program in one of the main hospitals in San José, Costa Rica. He has also written two
textbooks for medical students in the field of Urology and more recently has been trained
on applications of laser surgery in Urology, especially for modern treatment of benign
prostatic hypertrophy.

General Urology
Office management of urologic conditions including
benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostatitis, blood in urine, legions on genitals, testicular
pain, testicular masses, sexually transmitted diseases and voluntary sterilization by
bilateral vasectomy. Procedures include: flexible cystoscopy, urinary flow rate, prostate
specific antigen (PSA) testing, prostate ultrasound and prostate biopsy.
Endorology
Minimally invasive procedures for diagnosis and treatment of urologic conditions,
especially stone disease, involving the kidney, urethra and bladder. We use extracorporeal
shock wave lithotripsy for kidney stones.
Female Urology
Surgical procedures and the management of urologic disorders involving the female patient,
in particular: urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections, and female sexual
dysfunction.
Infertility
Investigation and treatment of male factors contributing to the infertile couple.
Procedures include: microscopic vasectomy reversal, semen analysis, testicular biopsy,
sperm aspiration, assessment for genetic conditions and in collaboration with female
infertility specialists.
Male Sexual Dysfunction
Impotence, libido disorders, ejaculation and orgasm disorders, evaluated by state of the
art diagnostic treatment procedures. Diagnostic studies include: neurologic and hormonal
assessments, duplex Doppler ultrasonography, dynamic infusion cavernosometry and selective
arteriography. Therapies include: psychological counseling, intracavernosal injections,
vacuum devices, microvascular bypass surgery, and... the insertion of inflatable penile
prostheses, one of our specialties... and, most prevalent treatment.
Neurology
Neurologic disorders including multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, stroke and diabetes
which lead to urologic dysfunction. Examples include: urinary incontinence, stone disease,
urinary tract infections and urinary retention.
Oncology
Treatment for urologic tumors involving: kidney, urethra, bladder, prostate, testicle and
penis. Procedures include: radical surgery with continent diversion, laser surgery radical
prostatectomy for prostate cancer, cryosurgery, cystoscopic surgery.
Kidney Transplantation
Patients accepted for transplantation benefit from the intervention of a highly
experienced team of transplant specialists. This team includes transplant surgeons,
nephrologists, anesthesiologists, nurse coordinators, and dedicated administrative staff.
The referring physician, patient and family members are considered integral members of the
treatment team. Timely communication with the referring physician is a priority among the
entire transplant team... throughout the care of patients.
