In this 10 x 10 inch, full color, soft cover, coffee table book, the
author traces the history of the painted oxcart in Costa Rica,
discussing its contributions to national development, how painting them
became a tradition, who the artists were and where they worked. She
describes the life of oxcart drivers before the advent of automobiles,
sharing with us the culture, folk tales, and customs that grew out of
that way of life, all of which have richly flavored present-day Costa
Rican society. Based on extensive research, interviews, and time spent
with oxcart drivers and artists, the book uncovers information unknown
to even many native Costa Ricans. Its lavish illustrations and charming
text reveal another aspect that makes Costa Rica unique.
The book project was declared of cultural interest by Costa Rica’s
Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in 2004. Auspiciously, its
publication coincides with the UNESCO proclamation on 25 November 2005
of Costa Rica’s oxcart tradition as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible
Heritage of Humanity.
